Something new in Old Ascalon?
I've done the hard-mode "loop" from the Sanitarium to Old Ascalon farming the Hulking Stone Elementals more times than I can possibly count and today was the first time I ran into Charr. Grawl, yes, Gargoyles, yes ~ but never Charr. They were where a nice nest of Elementals usually are. I was ill prepared! Terrified even..lol. Anyone else run into them?

It happens in normal mode as well as hard mode. It's a rare spawn, but I've seen it happen a few times.

I remember that for one character, after completing The Great Northern Wall (where Charr invade) but before Fort Ranik (where you drive the Charr back), there were shittone of Charr out in Old Ascalon. I always figured it was a story thing. Maybe it really is random spawn. Can someone confirm this for me?

Did you grab the ranger quest from Ranger Master Nente? Because I remember getting Charr spawns AFTER I picked that quest up.

There is a Charr spawn from the ranger quest, and he leads you to them. However, I did once run into a Charr spawn -- in NM -- without that quest, and it wasn't in the quest location. So, it seems that there is a rare random spawn.
It surprised the heck out of me at the time, but it probably shouldn't have since there are Charr-style prison enclosures in the devourer cave. Presumably the Charr have been able to sneak scouting bands south of the wall that have gone undetected long enough to build a secret hideaway for interrogating prisoners. I tried reporting this discovery to Tydus, thinking it would be a good place to set up an ambush, but he just brushed me off ...

Thanks everyone ~ I thought I knew all the variations of that run, but I guess not. They didn't show up today. Thankfully. I hate Charr. Damned medieval flaming arrows.
Tydus ...well I suppose he has other things on his mind..lol.
